Hospice RNs Needed to Fill Vacancies by Retirees in 2020
Five years from now, more than a million health care providers and new nurses will be needed to fill the vacancies to be left by retirees in 2020.
Most people hope to live out their remaining years at the comfort of their homes. But sometimes, health circumstances may lead to moving to a nursing home or assisted living facilities. Usually, when a person’s illness is terminal, hospice facilities or hospice care at home may be the most caring solution.
The number of people working as personal care aides has grown to almost a million in just a decade, from 2002 to 2012. It is an increase of more than a hundred percent. At such, it is estimated that another million nurses will be needed to replace the current hospice nurses that are to depart with the healthcare industry in the year 2020.
Hospice facilities offer end-of-life care, a comprehensive care for the dying, wherein the focus is comfort that can ensure a peaceful than a painful death. Hospice nurses are also involved in helping patients, and their families, feel more comfortable about death and providing them with the emotional support they need. They need to be prepared so that when a loved-one dies, the loss will be less devastating for the family.
Nurses who are to fill the future vacancies should be friendly, compassionate, great educators and communicators. Such nurses should also be able to work independently and possess critical thinking skills. This is because nursing in a home environment is very different from being in a care facility wherein the technology and resources are readily available.
Nurses to look for in the future are registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse and certified nursing assistant who not only have the ability to go into homes and work with various groups of people every day, but nurses who can also adapt quickly and have the ability to pay attention to details.
More people are pushing for home and hospice care because patients are most likely to be better in a familiar home setting, aside from the fact that it is less expensive than being in a hospital for months, even years.
Nurses who are still unemployed may look for experiences as home or hospice nurses since it will be the trend in the coming years.
