NURSE ENLIGHTENMENT: Different Types of Nurses (Part1)
Nurses provide a wide spectrum of services to patients of all kinds. They're not only checking our vitals, visiting our rooms for medicine intake and assisting doctors and physicians.
There are different types of nurses that perform different duties for every patient. The level of care they provide depends on what kind of preparation they had. Nursing generally falls into three categories – non-degree, degree and advanced degree.
NON-DEGREE: Included in this category are the Certified Nurse's Aides (CNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs, or sometimes referred to as Licensed Vocational Nurse or LVN). Though they don't have degrees in nursing, they have undergone training and received certification to perform their duties.
DEGREE: This refers to Registered Nurses or RNs that can have an associates degree in nursing, a bachelor degree in nursing or a diploma from a special hospital-based program. Those with bachelor's degree have an edge in career opportunities than with associates degree.
ADVANCED DEGREE: Belonging to this category are nurses that have successfully completed master's or doctorate-level work. Advance Practice Nurses (APNs)are those with master's degree. They include Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Clinical Nurse Leaders (CNLs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs), and Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetics (CRNAs).
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNPs)or nursing PhDs are the nurses with doctoral degrees.
For the upcoming article, we'll discuss these nurses together with their duties and responsibilities.
