Tips to Be an Exemplary Student Nurse

The number of student nurses grows yearly. Some schools have over a thousand students taking up the most coveted course. Some would argue that the constant increase in the number of nursing students is directly proportional to the decrease in the quality of nursing education. That is however, not the case.

The increase in number does not mean that the quality of education has gone down. It simply means that students have to work harder in order to excel in this field. Here are a couple of tips that would help one become an exemplary student nurse.

Do your Homework

This phrase is not restricted to the fact that you have to do all your assigned tasks. It also means that you have to be prepared for anything. If for example, you are scheduled to have your duty in an operating room setting – make sure that you brush up on the necessary topics. Learn what you need to gain knowledge of. That way, you will have an answer when you are asked. It will also help you better understand your patient’s needs.

Listen

Nursing lessons are often very interesting, yet they can also be very boring. No matter how exciting or boring the lesson is, you need to listen. This tip not only applies for student nurses seeking to excel, but for all students as well. Listening should also go beyond the classroom setting. It is also most important in the field. Listen to instructions and patient’s verbalizations as they are often the key to your patient’s well being.

Ask

This tip applies to life in general as it does to student conduct. Especially in situations that deal with human life. “Never assume anything”.  If you are unsure about something, do not hesitate to ask for clarification. This is very important in carrying out doctor’s order and giving out medication. A mistake in this area could mean serious consequences for you and your patient.

Have Fun

Don’t take things too seriously. Have fun.  Being a student nurse can be very demanding. That is why you should take a load off when you can. Chat with your patient, fellow students and superiors. This often helps take the edge off things and helps you work better. Cheerful talk can also help your patients feel better and hasten the mental and physical healing process.
