Tips for New Nursing Grads
As you grow into your new role, remember that countless others have made this transition and survived. Nursing graduates who passed through their first 90 days can relate specifically to what you are going through and offer real-world advice.
Here are the few ways that will help you start your nursing career off on the right foot:
- Hunt Efficiently. Attend job fairs in your area. The job situation can be very different across rural and urban areas. Try to visit job postings of the hospitals and agency websites.
- Prove your knowledge through action. Don't tell your colleagues that you are smart, show them instead. And remember, never let your ego in the way either. You are responsible for the life of another individual.
- Get some experience. Many nursing grads fear that having short-term employment in a clinic or long-term care facility on their resume will harm their chances of being hired. Emphasize the urgency of getting some type of nursing experience such as internship, outpatient setting or volunteer work.
- Network. If you know nurses who are employed, keep in touch with them so that they will let you know of job openings. Attend meetings and meet people who might have tips on where the jobs are in your area.
- Relax and take a deep breath. Take comfort of the fact that you have obtained a quality education and passed the licensing examination. Have faith that you are called to the profession of nursing for a reason.
Nursing is a great profession and probably one of the few careers that give you skills and abilities that you can apply in many different situations. Don't wait until you graduate or take boards to take action toward finding jobs and make sure that is your resume is tailored to the job you are seeking.
