Things About Nursing Degrees You May or May Not Know
Nursing education is a complex world. There are many nursing degrees you can choose ranging from the traditional to online or in mixed formats. Many nursing specialties are also emerging as the demand for specific illness care increases.
Whether you are someone who is preparing to have your nursing degree or a nurse who is aiming for a higher one, you may not know yet about these things.
Your nursing degree doesn’t make you a ‘nurse’. Yes you have a nursing degree. But that doesn’t mean that you are already a nurse. One must first pass a nursing licensure examination to work as a nurse and be called a ‘nurse’. (Of course, everyone knows this.)
Don’t take a nursing degree if you really want to go to med school. Simply put, if you want to be a nurse, take a nursing degree. If you want to be a doctor, go to med school. Nursing programs focuses on nursing tasks, care plans, etc., while pre-med programs emphasize on biology, chemistry and physics. So if you want to be a physician, but advanced nursing practices don’t appeal to you, then directly go to med school.
You may have a higher nursing degree, but it doesn’t equal your efficiency as a nurse. It’s only a title, but your experiences as a nurse is what matters most. A patient would trust more an experienced nurse over someone who just had the ‘degree’.
Nursing degree has math subjects (yes they do!). If you only want to take a nursing degree because you hate math, think again. Mathematics is also essential in nursing field. You have to calculate the correct drug doses and IV rates or else, your patients’ health will be compromised.
Experiences in healthcare institution will help in passing nursing degree program. The saying ‘experience is the best teacher’ is true. Though classroom education and books help, experiences in a real surrounding with real situation is best for those who wants to pass a nursing degree because of familiarity.
