RX means Prescription
Why does RX stand for prescription since 'prescription' starts with 'P'?
There are many theories about the origin of this symbol. The RX symbol is used by doctors before a prescription and each theory explains why this symbol is used.
The symbol is an abbreviation for the Latin word 'recipere' or 'recipe', which means 'Take, thou.' The symbol is also a corruption of the symbol of Jupiter, the Roman God.
RX was placed on prescriptions to invoke the deity's blessing on the medicine to help a person get well. The symbol has stayed, meaning prescription and sometimes pharmacy. While the symbol does not have the same meaning today, it can have the same meaning for some, though it doubtful that anybody is praying to Jupiter for cure.
Now, recreational use of prescription drugs is a serious problem. The problem of prescription drug misuse and abuse is particularly alarming among youth. National studies show that teenager is more likely to have abused a prescription drug than an illegal street drug. More teens are abusing prescription drugs than heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine combined.
The most significant causes of prescription drug misuse and abuse among young people is a lack of understanding about the importance of proper use. We need to help build knowledge that this perceives safety is predicated in proper use.
There are very serious in the health risk in taking prescription drugs. This is why they are taken only under the care of a doctor.
