5 Effective Time Management Tips for New Nurses

Prioritizing and organizing is vital for nurses. However, new nursing graduates may find it a little difficult to manage their time because of the rapid and hectic pace of nursing. When volumes of works come in, try to apply these tips:

1.  Avoid the merry-go-round syndrome.  It is when you make lots of movement with little direction.  Arrive 15-minute earlier before your shift to give yourself time to check your assignments, charts, new orders and jot them all down to determine which task must be prioritized first and when to accomplish each.

2.  Estimate times. Record how long or fast you should be doing a certain work.

3.  Ask for help and involve others when necessary.

4.  Should patient’s wants to chat during med pass, listen for few minutes then tell them that you would love to stay and talk but there are other things you need to do. Tell them how many patients you are taking care of and how long you will be working for the day. To make them feel that you care for them, tell them that you will be back and that they can call on you should they need your assistance.

5.  Always keep a cheat sheet handy. Write things down as soon as possible to avoid forgetting the details. This will make your charting speedy.

These tips are just among the tricks experienced nurses do to cope up with their daily tasks. You'll discover and learn that stuff eventually.
