Being fired is not cool and nobody ever wants to experience it. In the medical profession, termination damages the reputation of a healthcare practitioner for good. NursingGuide lists 5 common grounds that may cause job loss for the nurses.
- Failure to obtain or renew the license. Nurses are required to maintain a valid nursing license. Nurse's failure to renew or obtain a nursing license results in automatic termination.
- Absenteeism. Getting sick or whatever the excuses maybe, finding a replacement nurse is quit difficult. If it becomes habitual, then instead of finding a nurse replacement on the last minute, the hospital may opt to find a full-time replacement for you.
- Sleeping while on duty. Sleep deprivation is a common nursing issue. However, being caught sleeping during the shift especially in a patient's bed is totally a firing offense. There are hospitals, however, that allow nurses to take power naps during breaks to regain vigor.
- Sharing work issues on social media. This behaviour is interpreted as violation of patient's privacy and dishonouring the nursing code of conduct.
- Abuse and misuse of drug prescription. Popping prescription drug or trying patient's medication is another ground for termination. Being in a medical profession requires focus and utmost attention to details to assure patient's safety. Drug addiction is definitely not tolerable.
